Ye Peida    Academician

Professor YE Peida (1915 – 2011), also known as YE Tianyi, was from Nanhui District, Shanghai. He was the third President of Beijing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications (BIPT, currently Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications). He was the leading expert in the realm of communication science and technology and eminent scholar in microwave and optical communication in China.

 

Graduated from Pei-Yang University in 1938, Professor YE Peida went to Columbia University, United States, for his further studies from 1945 to 1946. After that, he worked as the Engineer in Central Radio Station from 1947 to 1949 and concurrently the associate professor at Jinling University in Nanjing. He was the professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Peiyang University in 1949 and worked at the same time as the Engineer with China Central Administration of Radio. He was the Professor and Dean of the Department of Telecommunications at Tianjing University in 1952. He then was transferred as Professor to the Department of Wireless Communications, BIPT, and stayed successively as the Dean of the department, Assistant President, Vice President and President of BIPT. Afterwards, he was appointed as the permanent Honorary President of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT).

 

He was elected as the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980, IEEE Fellow in 1988 and member of The Electromagnetic Academy of MIT, USA in 1990. He was the of ICCC and was member of the National Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) for four successive terms.

 

In his early research commitments, he took the lead in designing, installing and testing China’s first 100kW Rhombic Antenna and the Broadcasting Mansion in Nanjing. He contributed greatly in restoring our country’s Large Radio Transmitter and Tian An Men Broadcasting System. He was the first to open up the course of “Microwave Technology” for the undergraduates and then turned to research on millimeter wave communication system based on H01 circular waveguide and gained great achievements. He initiated the research on free space optical communication and was the first to take the master students working at optical communication under his supervision. At the same time, he developed and produced our country’s first Microwave Wave-Guide Phase Shifter and Microwave Wave-Guide Direct-Coupled Filter which were awarded the Prize of National Congress of Science and Technology. Of his research work, you can also find digital microwave communication system with 120 channels. After 1976, Prof. Ye focused his research on optical communication technologies and had ever since made major achievements in key devices such as coherent optical fiber communication systems, optical soliton communication systems, tunable and single-frequency-stablized semiconductor lasers. Similar achievements also made in polarization noise, modal noise and fiber nonlinearity. He proposed, directed and accomplished the project on the Theme of Communication in National 863 Program.

Chen Junliang    Academician

Professor CHENG Junliang (1933 – Present), academician of both China Academy of Sciences and China Academy of Engineering, expert in communication and electronic system, one of the founders of China’s SPC switching system, pioneer of China’s intelligent network (IN). He was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province.

 

In 1960s, Prof. Chen was one of the leading developers for wired 600/1200 baud and wireless 600 baud data transportation equipment. He researched and developed the wireless data transportation system for China’s first satellite – ‘DongFangHong’, and this won him the National Science Congress Award in 1978.

 

In 1980s, he was engaged in the development of ‘DS-2000 SPC digital switching system’ in the “6th Five-year Plan” and the ‘DS-30 SPC digital switching system’ in the “7th Five-year Plan”. He was mainly responsible for the development of diagnostic program in SPC switching system, when proposed the theoretical model for digital switching network and diagnostic program for switches.

 

In 1990s, he was the first to be engaged in the network intelligence research and developed China’s first IN system, creatively solved the problem of IN’s system architecture, service creation, software reliability and overload control, realized the industrialization of the system and this system has been widely used in China’s telecommunication networks. The above work has won the National Science and Technology Progress Award for 3 times.

 

Currently he is engaged in the research of network intelligence and network service. He is the Dean of the Institute of Network Technology, BUPT, and Editor-in-chief of China Communications, a joint CIC-IEEE Publication.

Xu Daxiong    Academician

Professor XU Daxiong is a foreign academician of National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyz Republic, and a famous scientist in information optics. He was born in Jiangsu province in 1928, and graduated from the Department of Physics, Tsinghua University in 1951. From 1951 to 1956, he was with Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications as a teacher and the director of physical discipline. Since 1956, he has been with Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunication, working as the dean and the assistant president successively. Now he is the professor and PhD supervisor of Institute of Information Photonics and Optical Communications, BUPT, and Honorary President of Century College, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (CCBUPT), and Director of Academic Committee, CCBUPT.

 

Professor XU has long been engaged in the research and development of the laser holography and technology of optical information processing. He has won many achievements, especially in accomplishing more than 20 research projects supported by the State government and Ministries. He published over 80 academic papers, and gave keynote speeches and invited talks at more than 20 international conferences. His excellent work in research has won him 9 science and technology awards granted by the state government and ministries. He has done pioneering work in the development of the optical information science and its applications in the national economy in China. He proposed and developed varieties of high diffraction efficiency and high resolution holographic recording media and new devices. He did the same work in proposing various technologies on two-dimensional optical transformation and multiple-scale optical transformation; in developing the holography technology by using the stripe of carrier waves, and in presenting varieties of new photonic devices and binary optical perfect-shuffle interconnection network. He is the fellow of the China Institute of Communications, senior member of the Chinese Optical Society, honorary president of Beijing Optical Society, the consultant of State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision, the chief expert consultant of Chinese Association of Anti-Counterfeiting Technology, and the Chinese consultant of the International Association of Holographic Manufacturing.

Zheng Houzhi    Academician

Professor Zheng Houzhi is academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and  the expert in physics. He was born in 1942, graduated from Tsinghua University in 1965. He is the director and researcher of the Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences and chief scientist of National “973 project”. He has achieved several pioneering results in the study of semiconductor low dimensional physics. He has announced the size effect of the Quantum Hall effect, distribution characters of Hall electric potential, put forward and studied the split grate method to realize one dimensional electron gas and their characteristic. He has scored a lot of valuable achievements in magnetic resistance caused by multi-hole reaction, various resonance tunnel phenomenon, magnetic resistance phenomenon and diffusion coefficient of quantum Hall region, the measurement of Lando state density and spectrum of low dimensional excitons. Currently he serves as the Dean of School of Sciences, BUPT.

Xue Qikun    Academician

Professor Xue Qikun is academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences,  the expert of material physics. He was born in 1963, graduated from Shandong University in 1984, and obtained his Master degree and Doctor degree from the Institute of Physics of CAS in 1990 and 1994. He is researcher at the Institute of Physics of CAS and professor at Tsinghua University. He has long been engaged in the studies of manufacture of ultra-thin film, its characterization and physical performance. He launched the researches on growth kinetics of the second generation of semiconductor thin film GaAs of InAs / GaAs quantum wells (points), wide band gap semiconductors GaN and ZnO thin film, developed and improved the basic law of the group III-V compound semiconductor surface reconstruction; presided over research on the quantum size effect of a metallic ultra-thin film on a Si substrate of a semiconductor, quantitatively established intrinsic link between the quantum effect and material properties of the metal thin film system, found the quantum oscillation phenomenon of the coefficient of film thermal expansion, the work function, the superconducting transition temperature, undertook studies on self-organized growth of ordered nanostructures, invented several atomic-scale precise-controlled growth technology to solve the problem of the structure of the hetero-epitaxial nanometer order growth, and developed several sets of low-temperature growth and atomic scale in situ detection device. He is the current Dean of the School of Electronic Engineering in BUPT.
